Almeda was my great grandmother. She was the mother of my mother’s mother.
When I first remember her she was about 82 years old. That would have been in about 1952. She lived in an apartment in Detroit on Nardin Park. She had lived there since her husband, Albert Rutherford, died in 1938. I went back to Detroit in 1990 for my 20th class reunion from law school and had an extra day so I wandered around Detroit and one of the places I visited was Almeda’s apartment on Nardin Park. She had died in 1957 so 33 years had gone by. It was still occupied. However, a few years later I found a website called the Ruins of Detroit and it had a picture of the Nardin Park Apartments in ruins.
I remember being in her apartment. She had a live-in woman helper whose bedroom was a little closet off the living room. She lived on the second or third floor and her apartment was on the front of the building facing the park. It was nice building.
The building next door was the Nardin Park Methodist Church which she attended. I remember my great grandmother as being quite religious. She gave me a Bible for my 8th birthday in which she had written a family tree. When she died in 1957, I was 10 years old, I entered the information about her death in the Bible.
